What caused the pain when my contact lense with a hole in it went in to my eye?

i have just got a new pair of trail monthly disposable contact lenses early in the day i was rubbing my eye and it fell out and as i put it back in i found that there was a terrible stabbing pain in my right eye and i took the lenses out and i found there was a small hole in it and even after that it still hurt and could barley open my eye and even after hours it still hurt. What as wrong with putting it in my eye? and Why did it hurt so much? thank you for reading
